New policy targets tyre costs

"ATS Euromaster approached me in 2009 for an exploratory conversation about our tyre policy and with the offer of carrying out a free, no obligation tyre audit across the fleet.

Tyres form a considerable part of our running costs, so I was interested to see what the inspection would show.  The data ATS Euromaster collected allowed them to make a number of recommendations and detail how they could work with us to ensure we got the maximum performance from every single tyre.

Together we developed a new tyre policy which has put the ability to manage our tyres directly back into our own hands.  As well as changing supplier, we've also changed the brand of tyres we're fitting too – plus ATS Euromaster carry out an in-depth tyre inspection every month.  It's all recorded electronically, with an online report available to view literally as soon as their fleet inspector drives out of the gate.

The information it provides is invaluable.  I'm confident the new tyre policy will not only increase uptime, it will deliver savings to the bottom line too."

Geoff Moulton, Managing Director
Anglia Freight

Established in 1993, Suffolk-based Anglia Freight is a dynamic, forward-thinking logistics company. It runs a mixed fleet of 27 trucks and 35 trailers from its four acre base in Eye, Suffolk - also home to a modern 140,000 square foot warehouse.  The company is a member of both Palletline and Hazchem, plus has established freight forwarding partners to ship products worldwide.

Business Requirement
ATS Euromaster first approached Anglia Freight after identifying the company as a prospective customer, given its large market share amongst distribution and logistics operators.  An initial meeting led to an opportunity to carry out a no-obligation tyre audit across the fleet.

Having drawn up a complete profile of the fleet's tyres, ATS Euromaster was able to highlight opportunities to further improve the efficiency of the customer’s tyre policy, including targets to:

  • Use more remould tyres
  • Increase regroove rates
  • Measure the performance of all tyres on a monthly basis
  • Pay maximum attention to good tyre husbandry
  • Reduce annual tyre-spend

ATS Euromaster's Approach

Whilst the tyre audit had found that all tyres were operating in a safe and legal condition, it also highlighted a large percentage of new tyres were fitted to the fleet - suggesting the potential to increase the use of innovative techniques such as remoulding and regrooving.

ATS Euromaster worked in partnership with Anglia Freight to develop a fresh approach, including a switch from its existing Pirelli policy to a joint Kumho and Vacu-Lug fitment, with existing Pirelli tyres to be remoulded by Vacu-Lug as wear dictates.  This was to be supported by a programme of professional tyre husbandry designed to ensure the maximum longevity from every tyre.
