Truck tyre retreading

Tyre retreading is the replacement of a worn tread with a new one of similar properties.

Retreading a tyre is a process that uses an existing or previously used tyre casing that meets quality standards, even if it requires some repairs. Retreading is therefore a recycling operation.
There are two retread techniques used today:

• Hot retreading:
Hot retreading is when uncured rubber is added to the casing. The tread pattern is then formed during the moulding process.

• Cold retreading
Cold retreading is when a pre-moulded layer of rubber is attached to the casing with cushion gum and cured in an autoclave to effect the bond.

Benefits of retreading:
• Performance is comparable to new tyres – similar road handling, rolling resistance, mileage and safety standards of a new tyre
• It costs approximately 60% of a new tyre
• Saves natural resources – a retreaded tyre uses only 20-30% of the raw materials of a new tyre
