Craig Fisher, European Metal Recycling’s Transport Manager for the North West and Scotland, says: “Now that we have a proven tyre policy with ATS Euromaster we have been rolling this out as the fleet expands. Part of this growth comes from acquiring smaller recycling companies, which means we inherit a range of policies and tyre service agreements.
“Our fleet operates across 70 sites in the UK where there is a lot of scrap metal, so daily inspections to check the condition of tyres ensures that the fleet is always ready for work the following morning. It has also helped to reduce our tyre related breakdowns at the roadside by 25 per cent, which equates to a huge saving in unexpected vehicle downtime,” he adds.

The contract also gives European Metal Recycling access to a wealth of tyre management information provided by ATS Euromaster, allowing complete visibility of a tyre’s life from cradle to grave, showing when it was first fitted, tread depth measurements throughout its life, and then the reason the tyre was eventually replaced. Routine reports also highlight any part worn stock which is available, including tyres which have been regrooved, remoulded or repaired, together with data on the cumulative tyre spend by vehicle and location.
Over the past 12 months this data has highlighted to the customer that previous policies of fitting budget tyres can be a false economy, and that adopting a premium fitment policy provides better cost efficiencies, as the tyres last longer, are more resistant to damage and have higher repairability rates.
European Metal Recycling’s tyre policy is to fit premium Michelin tyres, which can then be regrooved and remoulded by ATS Euromaster in line with Michelin’s Four Lives tyre policy. Encore tyres manufactured by Michelin are also fitted to the second-steer and drive axles of some vehicles in the fleet, which ranges from 18 to 44 tonners, and includes a mixture of tractor units, hooklifts and skip-loaders.
Like all fleet customers, European Metal Recycling also benefit from ATS Euromaster’s centralised authorisation system, which guarantees that all tyres fitted follow the specified fitment policy. This operates across all ATS Euromaster centres nationwide, ensuring that regardless of a vehicle’s location when a tyre is required, the correct brand and specification is fitted every time.

“Our business aims to deliver 100 per cent trust, reliability and punctuality, which are the same key features we look for in our service providers,” says Peter Palmer, Service Quality Manager at Excelsior Coaches. “By appointing ATS Euromaster we are confident that we have chosen a supplier with proven experience and one which has a strong European network to support our fleet.
“As part of the new agreement with ATS Euromaster we will benefit from regular fleet inspections to monitor tyre condition, which will complement our own daily vehicle checks and ensure our tyres remain in perfect operating condition. It also means we have the reassurance of 24/7 access to ATS Euromaster’s rapid response fleet in the unlikely event of a tyre related breakdown, meaning unexpected vehicle downtime can be resolved quickly,” he adds.
Managed by ATS Euromaster’s commercial vehicle centre in Poole, this new deal will see mobile service vans carrying out tyre service work and inspections on-site at Excelsior Coaches’ premises within Bournemouth’s Central Business Park.
Excelsior Coaches operates one of the most modern fleets in the country, including six 12.8 metre and three 12 metre luxury executive coaches which entered operation at the beginning of 2008. These latest vehicles add to an already extensive fleet profile of vehicles which includes 26, 43, 49 and 53-seat coaches, with vehicles averaging up to 100,000 miles a year.
Travelling extensively in Europe means many of Excelsior Coaches’ vehicles are fitted with Continental HDW SCAN tyres, which provide excellent grip in adverse weather conditions. Coaches travelling into mainland Europe during the winter season also carry snow chains, to ensure optimum grip if weather conditions deteriorate.
