Salford Van Hire has adopted a pence per kilometre (PPK) tyre contract with Michelin to support the 18 vehicles it supplies on long term hire to Midcounties Co-Operative. The agreement will see tyres across the fleet of 26 tonne refrigerated trucks proactively managed by ATS Euromaster to deliver maximum performance, reliability and safety.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship between Salford Van Hire and ATS Euromaster, which already manages the Michelin tyres fitted for the company’s high profile contract with Arla Foods.
Steve McNally, Contracts and Fleet Engineer Director of Salford Van Hire, explains: “We’d previously used a number of independent tyre dealers to service our contract with Midcounties Co-Operative, but working with a single supplier with a nationwide capability is easier to manage and provides greater consistency for our customer.
“The move to fitting Michelin tyres replaces a mixed tyre policy and we hope to see improvements in overall performance as a result. The PPK structure also suits our business as it allows us to own the tyres, without the up front cost of outright purchase,” he adds.
Under the new tyre policy ATS Euromaster will carry out monthly fleet checks across the 18 vehicles supplied to Midcounties Co-Operative, which deliver chilled and frozen products to a network of convenience stories and supermarkets. Using a bespoke electronic data capture system, the checks allow technicians to record each tyre’s condition and tread depth onto a small handheld computer before uploading the report in ‘real time’ to the central Euromaster Inspector database.
Euromaster Inspector automatically advises both Salford Van Hire and the local ATS Euromaster centre of any remedial action required and the agreed timescale for completion. It also provides a system for checking that remedial actions have been completed and signed off.
All new tyres fitted to the fleet will follow Michelin’s unique Four Lives tyre policy, with tyres regrooved and remoulded to ensure maximum performance from each Michelin tyre casing. ATS Euromaster technicians will also carry out routine tyre maintenance, including adjusting tyre pressures, turning tyres on the rim, repairing tyre damage and recommending vehicles for wheel alignment checks, where necessary.
The Oxford-based Midcounties Co-operative is the second largest independent co-operative in the UK with a turnover of £712 million. It trades in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
Salford Van Hire is a major vehicle rental company offering cars, vans, trucks and trailers for spot hire, plus commercial vehicles on longer term contracts. Established over 40 years ago, today the company claims to be one of the single largest buyers of commercial vehicles in the UK.
