Bridgestone tyres create exciting Australian MotoGP

21st October 2013

The Australian MotoGP race at Phillip Island had a major impact on the title race, as championship leader Marc Marquez was disqualified for failing to pit in the designated window.

A new surface at the track meant the Bridgestone rear tyres were not safe to use after ten laps of the race.

Before the race a decision was made to implement a mandatory pit stop for all riders, with lap nine and ten designated for the bike swap.

However, Marquez pitted on lap 11 and was disqualified from the race, leaving his main rival and reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo to take the victory and close the gap in the title race to just 18 points with two races remaining.

Marquez's Repsol Honda team admitted that an error with the pitboard led to the Spanish rider staying on track for an extra lap and handing Lorenzo the win.

The championship now travels to Japan and Valencia for the last two events of the season.
