Cooper Tires to continue its association with the British F3 Series

12th March 2013

Iconic tyre manufacturer Cooper Tires has announced that it will be taking part in its fifth year in a row as the exclusive tyre supplier to the British Formula 3 (F3) Series.

The well-loved motorsport and the tyre maker has become synonymous with one another, ever since Cooper Tires began its title sponsorship and sole tyre supplier to the championship back in 2009.

However, the firm has a much longer history with the British F3 competition, seeing as though it had previously been associated with the tournament for more than 30 years under the Avon Motorsport banner.

During this time, Cooper Tyres has had the privilege of supplying its products and offering its expertise to such racing legends as Sir Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen.

All five of these iconic drivers showed their skills in the British F3 Series over the past few decades, before working their way up to the prestigious Formula One (F1) scene.

Each of the star’s exceptional skills behind the wheel can be seen by the fact that they all hold championship wins in both the British F3 and F1 competitions.

The thrills and spills of the Cooper Tires British F3 Championship was clear for all to see during the 2012 season, when fantastic racing by many drivers in the field resulted in the top three drivers entering the final weekend of the competition separated by a slender six points.

It was Jack Harvey who dug the deepest though, when he came from behind to steal the 2012 British F3 title, capping off an exceptionally action-packed series.

The victory saw Harvey become the first Brit to hold the championship since Mike Conway back in 2006, while the result also resulted in the Carlin team clinching their fifth successive constructors trophy in the motorsport.

However, it will be all change once more heading into the 2013 Cooper Tires British F3 Championship, especially seeing as though Harvey has announced that he will be moving up to GP3 this season.

On top of this, it has been revealed that the famous motorsport series will be given a restructured calendar system.

In effect, there will be four key dates for fans to look out for, starting with the weekend of May 25 and 26th when the 2013 British F3 campaign gets underway at Silverstone.

By the end of the upcoming season, the stars of British F3 will have been given the opportunity to show off their driving skills around three FIA F1 Grand Prix circuits. As well as a season-opening race at Silverstone in May, the motorsport will visit Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps between July 25th and 27th and Germany’s illustrious Nurburgring circuit from September 21st to 22nd.

Britain’s other iconic race track Brands Hatch will be the only event which British F3 teams will not need to share with F1 icons, with the series instead holding its race at the circuit alongside the Avon Tyres British GT Championship between August 10th and 11th.

Looking ahead to the 2013 season, Paul Coates, general manager of Avon Tyres Motorsport, acknowledged: “British Formula 3 has a rich and colourful history as one of motorsport’s most exciting and important championships and Cooper is proud to be part of it.

“Despite smaller grids in 2012, the racing was second-to-none and we all hope that the restructured calendar for this year will attract a similarly high level of racing at some great circuits.”
