Formula One legend Damon Hill has backed McLaren driver Jenson Button to succeed in the 2012 Formula One World Championship because of his suitability to the Pirelli tyres used in the competition.
Pirelli is set to unveil the new tyres that will be used in this year’s competition on January 25th.
But prior to this release, former world champion Damon Hill picked out Jenson Button as a potential challenger to Sebastien Vettel's dominance of the sport.
Vettel has won back-to-back titles over the last two years, but Hill, who captured the Formula One crown back in 1996, believes the British driver could offer some resistance this year.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "My hunch is it is going to be from McLaren.
"Jenson [Button] has matured into his place in McLaren and seems to be suited to these technical regulations and the tyres."
Last season saw some drivers struggle to adapt to the tactical demands of the new Pirelli tyres, which were debuting in the sport that year.
But with the Italian compound manufacturer continuing to create tyres that favour strategy and tactical racing over outright speed, the omens look good for the coming season.
