Fernando Alonso rejects Pirelli tyre theory

8th June 2012

Current Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso has rejected suggestions that managing the Pirelli tyres used in the sport has been the dominant reason behind his success this season.

The Spaniard has made a solid start to the current campaign and lies three points clear of nearest rivals Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Despite leading the standings, Alonso has picked up just one win so far this year, taking the chequered flag at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang along with podium finishes on two other occasions.

Speaking in a recent interview though, the Ferrari driver rejected suggestions that the high-degradation of the Pirelli tyres used this season has played a pivotal role in race results.

"They're not a big change and I don't agree that winning is all down to managing tyres," he told reporters from Grand Prix.

"Jenson Button won in Australia because he was the fastest all through, Malaysia was wet and we won, in China Rosberg dominated the whole weekend and in Bahrain Sebastian was quick."

Alonso is preparing to compete again, with the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal scheduled for this weekend.
