Firestone and IndyCar extend partnership

7th January 2013

Bridgestone Americas' Firestone brand is to remain as the sole tyre supplier of the IZOD IndyCar Series through to at least the 2018 race season.

A joint announcement by Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations and IndyCar revealed the extension of the deal, which continues a relationship that first developed 17 years ago.

Back in 1996, Firestone began to provide tyres to the competitors of the Indy Racing League. By the turn of the millennium, the deal extended to the point where the firm provided control tyres for both IndyCar and Champ Car events.

However, there were murmurings that the IndyCar series was going to pursue other tyre suppliers when the organisers began investigating alternative options.

Firestone racing chief Al Speyer has been pleased that IndyCar has concluded such action though, by committing to its partnership with the tyre firm.

Mr Speyer commented: "Our agreement to move forward together is a manifestation of the business value we both realise from this partnership as well as the legacy of safety and performance that we have built together over a century of experience."
