Hembery defends Pirelli tyres against Schumach-attack

23rd April 2012

Pirelli director of motorsport Paul Hembery has come out in defence of the new tyres used in the sport, following a verbal attack by former world champion Michael Schumacher.

The German driver endured another difficult weekend of racing in Bahrain, with his starting position of 22nd on the grid leaving him with little hope for the subsequent race.

Schumacher did eventually finish a credible tenth, but that did not stop the driver from hitting out that the Pirelli tyres and the "big importance" they play in overall race performance.

He argued that the current compounds have turned the sport into something of a conservation contest in recent months. Hembery subsequently moved to hit back at Schumacher's comments, which he admit "disappointed" him considerably.

"Others were getting on with the job and getting their tyres to work. His comments during winter testing were that he was very happy with the tyres and now he seems to have changed his tune," he said.

The eventful race in Bahrain eventually saw reining world champion Sebastian Vettel take his first victory of the season, with Kimi Raikkonen of Renault just behind him.
