Monte Carlo welcomes new rallying era

16th January 2013

After a ten-week break the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship begins again this week in Monte Carlo.

The pressure is on, with Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena aiming for their seventh win, in what is expected to be a high-octane few days.

Tyre choice is of upmost importance this week, with ice and snow likely to influence which type to use.

Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen have also begun the season with clear ambitions, after winning the rally back in 2010.

Finnish driver, Hirvonen said ahead of the race: "I have never felt so motivated at the start of the season."

However, he added that with such pressure there were a number of factors to consider to win in Monte Carlo.

"You have to make the right – or the wrong – tyres choices, push at the right time and know when to let a few seconds go in some sections," he explained.
