Pirelli will be bringing its P Zero Silver hard and P Zero white medium tyres to the US for the inaugural Formula One grand prix at the newly built Circuit of the Americas.
The sport's official tyre supplier decided to play it safe in terms of choice of compounds because there are still several unknowns when it comes to how exactly the track will perform.
Scheduled to take place on November 18th in Austin, Texas, the GP will be preceded by the usual practice and qualifying sessions so that drivers have a chance to get to grips with the new track and how their cars will perform.
Jaime Alguersuari, test driver for Pirelli, said: "I don't know anything at all about the Circuit of the Americas – I've only ever seen some photographs and videos – but it looks like a great track and a lot of fun to drive."
He said that sticking with hard and medium tyres is quite conservative because the drivers now have an understanding of the Pirelli tyres, but there are so many track-specific factors to consider, such as macro-abrasion.
"We could be looking at a one-stop race although there are other outside circumstances that can always affect this, such as safety cars and the weather. A new track often shakes things up a bit, so I’m sure it will be interesting."
