Pirelli has defended the role its new tyres have played in the Formula One World Championship so far, following another eventful weekend of racing.
Sebastian Vettel took the chequered flag in Bahrain last Sunday (April 22nd), as much of the chasing pack continued to grapple with the demands of the new Pirelli tyres, introduced this season.
Compound strategy has proven a crucial component of success in the sport so far this year, with the likes of McClaren admitting the important role tyre choice plays.
Other drivers meanwhile, like Michael Schumacher have hit out at the increasingly influential role compound use has in the competition – something he argues is to the detriment of the sport.
However Pirelli have now moved to quash such comments with motorsport director Paul Hembery eager to highlight the increased level of competition seen so far this year.
"The season so far has been fantastic: we've had four different winners and four different championship leaders," he said.
"The competition has never been closer and part of that is down to the fact that everyone has exactly the same opportunities and challenges with the tyres.”
He called on the drivers competing for this year’s World Championship crown to prove their worth by mastering the Pirelli tyres.
