Pirelli to supply 17″ Diablo tyre to 2013 World Superbike Championship

20th October 2011

Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli has announced that it will supply a larger tyre to teams competing at the World Superbike Championship in 2013.

The firm has confirmed that it will replace the current 16.5-inch tyres with larger 17-inch Diablo Superbike tyres.

Pirelli, which is the sole tyre supplier for the sport, claimed that the new range of tyres will allow competitors to benefit from better handling due to its thicker tread.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "This radical option will allow Pirelli to remain even closer to its philosophy, its unique approach towards competition with its continuous transferring of solutions developed in the racing environment into the hands of motorcyclists and into road-going product through technologies and developments coming from the highest level production series World Championship."

Teams will be able to fit the new slick tyre without having to adapt the chassis or wheels of their motorcycles.

Since 2005, Pirelli's 16.5-inch Diablo Superbike tyres have been the only type used in the Superbike World Championship.
