Pirelli Tyres boss targets number one status in motorsport

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has set the Italian tyre manufacturer the target of becoming the number-one brand in the world of elite driving.

The comments came during an interview with the official Formula One website in which he explained how Pirelli's involvement in the sport was to play a major part in the manufacturer's strategic plan for the next three to five years.

"We are the premium brand and we want to be seen in the world as the number-one brand – and Formula One is the number-one motorsport," he said.

Pirelli returned to the sport this season and quickly set about making a major impact on the on-track drama with its high degradation compounds testing the driving skills of Formula One's finest.

Mr Hembery has had plenty of positive feedback from the drivers about the new Pirelli compounds too.

"In Brazil I spoke with 12 drivers about their feelings towards the tyres and they were all positive," he said.

Next season could be even better for the Italian manufacturer too, with the new P Zero tyres set to be introduced on a full-time basis, following successful trials in Abu Dhabi and Brazil.
