Pirelli tyres in spotlight again for Belgian Grand Prix

31st August 2012

This weekend will see Formula 1's return to Belgium's famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as the 12th round of the 2012 Formula One World Championships kick off.

The Spa-Francorchamps course is renowned for its speed, with one of the longest stretches on an F1 track between the points known as La Source and Les Combes.

Pirelli's controversial 2012 tyres will be back in the spotlight, the company having announced that drivers will have access to its hardest rubber for the race.

In terms of favourites for this year, Ferrrari's Fernando Alonso comes into the Belgian Grand Prix leading the Drivers' World Championship by 40 points – however, Alonso hasn't won on the Spa-Francorchamps for some time.

Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen finished second at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and is hotly tipped to challenge Alonso. He even secured the lap record on the Spa in 2004, and has expressed quiet confidence at his chances.

It's also notable that Michael Schumacher is celebrating his 300th career Grand Prix this weekend. The German racing legend has described the circuit as "like my living room", and while he trails by 135 points to Alonso, there's every chance he'll try to pull something special together for such a significant career milestone.
