McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has once again defended the Pirelli tyres that have featured in Formula One so far this season, arguing that they have only heightened the on-track drama.
Mr Whitmarsh re-iterated his support for the Italian compounds during Vodafone’s recent media phone in.
It follows criticism from German driver Michael Schumacher, and more recently Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz who claimed that the new tyres were having too much of an influence over the outcome of races in the sport this season.
Despite these claims though, Mr Whitmarsh remained adamant that the Pirelli compounds had been good news for Formula One, noting that a more conservative tyre would have been far worse.
"If they had made a benign and easy to use tyre then … the fans and the show will have been affected detrimentally,” he explained to Autosport.
The McLaren boss added that while the ups and downs of the current season were tough on the driving teams, it did mean that even now “it is all there to play for”.
