Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has praised the efforts of the team behind the new Pirelli tyres following his second day of testing in Jerez.

The German driver is eager to push on in the upcoming Formula One season, having earned five podium positions during his career so far.

Rosberg has made a fine start to pre-season testing too, after finishing yesterday (February 9th) as the fastest driver on the track, just ahead of Lotus driver Romain Grojean.

Speaking in an interview with Autosport, the 26-year-old admitted his excitement at the development of the new Pirelli tyres.

"It is going to have a big impact on the racing because the compounds are closer now," he said

"The [the compounds] are much closer together now. Degradation is still a big issue and the rear tyre seems a bit strong. Overall, Pirelli has done a good job."

Rosberg's Mercedes team has meanwhile been busy collecting data on the new compounds, with the firm set to unveil its latest car in Barcelona on February 21st.

Pirelli unveiled its latest compounds in Abu Dhabi last week, with drivers and constructors alike reacting positively to the new softer designs.
