Schumacher calls for multiple suppliers to improve tyre standards

20th July 2012

Seven-time world Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has claimed that the standard of tyres would improve if multiple suppliers were re-introduced.

The Mercedes driver has previously been critical of the Pirelli tyres currently used in the sport, even comparing the compound to "like driving on raw eggs", and he has once again criticised the Italian firm.

During a fan's forum run by the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), Schumacher claimed that the quality of tyres would improve if Pirelli faced competition from rival tyre suppliers.

"Then we would have decent tyres," the 43-year-old said.

Earlier this week, German publication Auto Bild reported that FIA president Jean Todt would like to see Michelin once again supply tyres for the F1 championship.

The French tyre manufacturer has previously ruled out a return to the sport unless rules are changed to allow makers to compete against each other again.
