The Pirelli tyres set to debut in the 2012 Formula One season could make for an "unpredictable" championship race, according to Team Lotus.
Speaking ahead of this weekend's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Lotus team principal Eric Boullier said he was anticipating a special year of racing.
Lotus made headlines earlier in the summer after signing up former world champion Kimi Raikkonen to race for the coming season.
The Finn previously departed the sport back in 2009, but after enjoying a brief foray into the world of rally driving and then the Nascar championship he has returned.
The 32-year-old is now set to line up for team Lotus alongside French teammate Romain Grosjean.
Since signing up though, Raikkonen has endured a stop-start beginning to his Formula One return, however Mr Boullier still believes that the coming season could bring a few surprises.
"It is going to be a freaky one! Qualifying in Melbourne and the first races are going to be unpredictable," he said. "The tyres are going to make things very interesting."
"If you push too hard in qualifying then you are going to be screwed for the first part of the race, and if you pit too early it may mean you need to make an extra stop," he added.
Qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix takes place on Saturday March 17th.
