Tyre failure ends Audi’s chances in Malaysia Endurance Race

20th September 2011

Audi was just minutes from victory in the 12-hour Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race in Sepang at the weekend, when a tyre blowout thwarted its chances of success.

The Audi R8 LMS has been the car to beat for the vast majority of the race, thanks to its ability to handle the extreme temperatures that presented themselves during the night race.

But just 18 minutes before the end, a failure occurred in one of hte car's rear tyres, requiring an additional pit stop right at the end to rectify.

Despite leading for most of the 1,779.3km, The Belgian Audi Club's (Team WRT) Frank Biela, Marcel Fassler and Marco Werner ultimately had to settle for second place, missing out on victory by just 70 seconds.

Commenting after the race, Fassler said: "The tyre blowout has been following me since Le Mans.

"In France we were lucky but here at Sepang it was really unfortunate. I had to drive a complete lap. I think that otherwise I could have easily managed to keep our advantage. I didn’t even risk anything but just kept driving my rhythm."
