Williams's chief operations engineer Mark Gillan has stressed the importance of careful tyre balance in determining race success in Formula One.
Mr Gillan was speaking ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and outlined his belief that management of the Pirelli tyres used in the sport could make or break a drivers race, regardless of how good his car is.
"Understanding the tyres and managing the tyres is the key to unlocking race performance," he told Autosport.
"The tyres are the number one item on the car, followed by aero and then engine."
Ensuring an effective balance in using the tyres during the qualifying and subsequent race will be crucial to Williams's success he added, as the team prepare for another busy weekend.
Williams Renault will be eager for a better result in Bahrain, with main driver Bruno Senna currently listed in ninth place in the driver's championship.
