Tyre maintenance is vital for fuel efficiency

18th February 2013

Ensuring your tyres are in good condition is vital to keep your vehicle running as efficiently as possible.

In a series of tips to encourage eco-driving, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) claimed that tyres should be checked regularly for pressure and tread depth. To get an accurate reading, you should always measure pressure when tyres are cold.

Failure to do this could result in a vehicle using more fuel than necessary, increasing petrol and diesel costs.

This advice is part of a wider push by the IAM to encourage fuel efficient driving. IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: “We’ve all got better things to spend our money on than petrol. Green driving can save you up to 15 per cent on your bills, as well as reducing your carbon emissions.”

Other ways to cut fuel use include breaking as infrequently as possible, switching off engines in traffic jams and sticking to the speed limit.
