75% of UK drivers ‘don’t know how to check engine oil’

23rd May 2012

The majority of UK motorists do not know how to check their car's engine oil, according to Mobil 1.

Research from the synthetic motor oil brand found that three in four drivers cannot perform this vital component of basic vehicle maintenance, while almost half of those surveyed admitted they are not even sure why oil is used.

Furthermore, 94 per cent of respondents were unaware that choosing the correct oil can significantly extend the lifespan of a car's engine.

Dan McGoldrick, field marketing advisor in the UK, Nordic and Benelux markets for Mobile 1 manufacturer ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialities, said: "Using the right oil for your engine can potentially improve fuel economy, reduce engine wear and save lots of expense in the long run."

The study comes just a matter of days after HonestJohn.co.uk revealed that 20 per cent of cars registered in 2008 failed their first MOT in 2011.

This statistic is as much down to a lack of regular maintenance as the cars' poor durability, the website claimed.
