Avoiding tyre repairs could cost you

19th July 2013

While some people put off their tyre repairs to save costs, this could prove more expensive in the long run.

Without regular checks on tyres, drivers significantly raise the risk of them bursting when on a journey.

Stuart Lovett of the Highways Agency said: “Nobody wants to start their holiday off by having a breakdown that leads to them having to extend their journey time.”

For this reason, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published guidance on how drivers can make sure their tyres are in good working order.

Checking the performance of your vehicle, such as fuel economy and handling, is a good indicator of the condition of tyres. Additionally, air pressure should be topped up regularly and the tread depth and overall condition of tyres should be inspected.

Nevertheless, if you know your tyres need work, it is better to book in to have your tyres serviced than to do it yourself.
