Drivers should look to carry out checks on tyres and take cars on short test drives before returning to work, Green Flag has urged.
The call comes as the breakdown service providers published its top ten most common causes for call outs.
Problems with tyres and exhausts were listed among the top ten issues, highlighting the need for more stringent checks.
The warning comes with the breakdown service anticipating a rise in breakdown call outs, as people return to work following the Christmas break.
Green Flag called on drivers to perform basic checks on brakes, tyres, oil and lights way in advance of travelling, with any problems quickly dealt with via a qualified dealer.
Miranda Schunke, spokesperson for Green Flag said: "Carry out your checks at least a day before you travel and take the car for a short drive."
With January representing a busy time for motorists, tyre suppliers and garages across the UK should be fully stocked and ready to deal with any maintenance requirements you may have.
