Drivers preparing to tackle the UK's treacherous highways will need more than just winter tyres to deal with the conditions, according to the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM).
The comments came as Britain faces up to another weekend of cold temperatures bringing snow and potential adverse icy road conditions.
While winter tyres can help you ensure you car maintains its grip on some of the most difficult of roads, IAM Drive & Survive training specialist Simon Elstow believes more will be required.
“We all need to respect the weather and make adjustments to deal with it," he said.
"Being mentally prepared as well as having the right equipment is vital.”
The comments come as Mr Elstow offers motorists six different tips for driving confidently in icy conditions.
These include ensuring you have de-icer and a scraper, staying in higher gears to avoid wheel spin and leaving more stopping distance between cars.
Other advice includes ensuring you take your foot off the accelerator and disengaging the clutch if your car runs smoothly and using second gear when setting off on level ground or downhill with drivers also advised to avoid using ABS systems.
