Fans of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) may be shocked to hear that from next year – 2013 – drivers in these races will be able to opt for a so-called soft compound tyre.
Racers will have to use these tyres in one of the three races they take part in, although their competitors won't know if they're using these faster tyres, which offer better performance, until all the vehicles are on the starting line.
Alan Gow, BTCC series director, suggested that the way in which drivers are allowed to use the tyres will mean there is an element of uncertainty about the competition.
"It's sure to provide some fascinating race day strategies, as each team won't know what their opposition are doing until they head out onto the grid", he said.
Mr Gow said that the teams have been in favour of the proposed changes and he suggested that the "exciting dimension" to the races will mean "spectators will love [the] new element to the championship."
Dunlop recently announced that it will be penalising drivers who fail to comply with racing rules. From 2013, any driver who receives three penalties for offences relating to driver discipline will be relegated six grid places.
