Ferrari has recruited Formula One engineer Hirohide Hamashima to its team for the upcoming 2012 season, in a bid to make the most of the new Pirelli Tyres.
Mr Hamashima comes to Ferrari with over a decades experience, having working on the development of tyres in the sport from 1997 to 2010.
Ferrari will be eager to utilise his knowledge of compounds too, with Pirelli's new tyres set to make their full season debut.
The compound manufacturer garnered praise from drivers and pundits alike for their high-degrading tyres last season, which added to the drama of the World Championship.
However, Ferrari failed to capitalise on the use of the new compounds, which favoured skill and strategy over outright speed.
Speaking to Eurosport about the appointment, team principal Stefano Domenicali outlined his plans for Mr Hamashima.
"He will give his contribution to the development of the car and the issue of the tyres, as this was an issue where last year we suffered in some conditions," he said.
The appointment follows Ferrari's recent announcement that a new car is set to be introduced in 2012.
