Finnish driver wins Pirelli UK Star Driver award

award 21st November 2011

Finnish rally star Jukka Korhonen has won the Pirelli UK Star Driver award for 2012.

The 27 year-old has become the first non-British driver to win the prize and will receive a fully-funded entry into the 2012 British Rally Championship in TEG Sport's Skoda Fabia R2 car.

Korhonen overcame five other drivers at a final selection event judged by Pirelli senior tyre engineer Matteo Braga, former British Rally champions Gwyndaf Evans and Jimmy McRae, and Petter's Solberg co-driver Chris Patterson.

Participants had to undergo interviews as part of the assessment, as well as pace-note preparation, a timed wheel change and core driving challenges.

Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said that all the drivers who made it through to the selection phase should feel proud of themselves.

He added: "But we can only pick one winner, and all the judges thought that Jukka would make an excellent ambassador for Pirelli on the British Rally Championship as part of the prestigious Star Driver scheme, with the right performance and mental strength to really make a difference."

Tommy Doyle, Desi Henry, Osain Pryce, Siim Plangi and Peter Taylor were the other finalists at the event.
