GEM issues flip flop driving warning

10th August 2012

Road safety organization GEM Motoring Assist has called on motorists to resist the overtures of the British summertime and ensure they wear appropriate footwear when driving.

The breakdown cover firm issued the warning amid growing concerns that many motorists are taking to the road in high heels and more alarmingly still flip flops.

These types of footwear are highly unsuitable for the road and can even impede a drivers' ability to use their brakes correctly and when required.

In many instances, flip flops for example can slip under the pedals, leading to a loss of control and a potentially serious road accident.

GEM Motoring Assist chief executive David Williams said:  "Any kind of distraction caused by the wrong shoes can easily cause a lapse in concentration, leading to a dangerous situation on the road.

"It is also wise, should you find yourself in a breakdown situation, to have a comfortable and sturdy pair of shoes in case you need to walk to the nearest motorway emergency phone to call for help."
