UK motorists should order their winter tyres to ensure they are prepared for the upcoming big freeze, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
The independent road safety charity group has revealed that cold weather tyres offer a number of benefits to drivers during the winter as they have an altered tread pattern to give better grip on snow and ice.
Furthermore, winter tyres use a different type of rubber which stays flexible and maintains grip when the temperatures fall below freezing.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said: "The weather we experience in the UK is nowhere near as severe as many other countries, but with the past two winters having been particularly bad, motorists in the hardest-hit areas may feel reassured to have the extra grip winter tyres afford."
The IAM recommends that motorists should regularly check the tread depth and pressure of their tyres to ensure performance levels are maintained.
