French tyre manufacturer Michelin has won the right to become the official tyre supplier to the 2013 edition of the Asian Le Mans Series.
The firm was selected for the privilege to represent the illustrious motorsport competition after impressing in a process that was open to all tyre manufacturers across the globe.
With the deal now signed, Michelin will be responsible for supplying tyres and associated services in 2013 edition of the Asian endurance racing championship, with the work overseen by the Asian Endurance Operating Company Limited and sanctioned by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.
The partnership between the two parties was formally agreed when a deal was penned by Serge Grisin, the director of the four-wheel motorsport programmes at Michelin, and Mark Thomas, who is both the managing director of the Asian Endurance Operating Company Limited and the licensee of the Asian Le Mans Series.
Mr Grisin commented that he was now excited to get the 2013 Asian Le Mans Series underway, stating: "Thanks to its exacting technical regulations which are coherent with those of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Asian Le Mans Series is a great showcase to illustrate the benefits of the Michelin Total Performance plan at a very high level.
“This plan is core to the Group's research and development strategy and consists in using unique technologies to develop tyres that deliver high performance in all areas, even in those which are frequently seen as irreconcilable.”
The tyre manufacturer’s director of the four-wheel motorsport programmes was also keen to add that the deal gives Michelin the opportunity to reinforce its footing in the ever-growing motoring market of Asia.
"The interest of Asian motorists in cars and their demands are evolving very quickly," Mr Grisin acknowledged.
"The culture of motorsport, which has long been deeply rooted in Japan and South Korea, is today developing in China. Michelin sees motorsport as an opportunity to demonstrate the qualities of its tyres to this new generation of enthusiasts who demand both safety and performance.”
As well as supplying tyres to all teams involved in the 2013 edition of the Asian Le Mans Series, Michelin is also going to be responsible for overseeing the logistics part of the motorsport and offering its service to everyone in the pit lane at all six rounds of the competition.
When it comes to the tournament’s tyre regulations for the upcoming season, each team will be supplied with one set of tyres. This is to be made up of two front tyres and two rear tyres, each of which are of different sizes and are being presented with a wide range of characteristics.
Offering his insight into the finalisation of the tyre supplier deal, Mr Thomas said: "We are delighted to have Michelin on-board with us for this season which is very important for the development of the Asian Le Mans Series.
“Michelin can claim an unrivalled commitment, experience and record in endurance racing. I am sure its contribution will satisfy the 2013 field which is particularly rich, not merely in numbers but also in terms of the cars and drivers who will be competing.”
