The number of road incidents caused by tyre issues has led to the introduction of a new 'safe tyres save lives' message being displayed on traffic noticeboards on motorways.
It is hoped the advisory message will reduce the number of collisions, closed lanes, injuries, tailbacks and delays that can be caused when poorly maintained tyres malfunction while a vehicle is travelling at 70mph.
Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, noted that tyre-related incidents cause a great deal of problems on the UK's road networks, so it is important motorists check them before travelling.
"The new message signs are a great reminder to drivers about the four small pieces of rubber that are responsible for them being able to brake or corner and arrive at their destination safely," he added.
Tyre issues are a significant problem in the UK, with the Highways Agency, which is responsible for the motorway network, reporting 2,500 tyre-related incidents in May and June alone.
