New TyreSafe film highlights money-saving tyre tips

23rd August 2012

Tyre safety organisation TyreSafe yesterday launched a new film to help businesses understand how adequate tyre maintenance can save money on fuel bills and aid safer driving.

The film states it is estimated that a third of cars on the UK's roads have dangerously under-inflated tyres, and stresses that 'correct tyre pressures play a critical role in maximising fuel efficiency'.

This is because under-inflated tyres increase their roll resistance on the road, meaning more energy is needed to make them turn. This, of course, has a knock-on effect on fuel consumption and overall running cost.

"It's been estimated that a car driving with tyres under-inflated by 20 per cent will reduce its fuel economy by 3 per cent. While that might not seem a lot for one car, when it's multiplied across a large fleet covering many miles, then that's a lot of wasted money," said Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.

Keeping your tyres topped up also allows for significantly better handling, and will prevent individual drivers and businesses alike receiving fines for failing to comply with regulations.
