Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli is set to "close the gap" between the performance of its different tyre compounds in next season's Formula One championships, according to a company executive.

In an interview with Autosport, Pirelli's director of motorsport Paul Hembery revealed that the firm is developing a new hard tyre which will be quicker than the current medium compound – ensuring for a more exciting season as teams have to be more strategic with their tyre choice.

He told the news provider: "We will close down the gap between the compounds and you will see races where hard and medium are used. The data is showing a big improvement in performance.

"We will have to reset all the compounds for next season. We want to close down the gaps of performance between the compounds, from 1.2 seconds to about 0.8 seconds."

Mr Hembery added that teams are unlikely to use the soft tyre this year as much as they did during the current season.

The last remaining race of this season is due to take place in Brazil at the end of November, with Jenson Button looking to finish second in the drivers' standings ahead of Fernando Alonso.
