Finnish motorsport ace Kimi Raikkonen showed that he still has plenty left to offer Formula One (F1) when he produced a thrilling display to win the Australian Grand Prix last weekend.
The Lotus driver eased to the chequered flag in the opening race of the prestigious motorsport’s 2013 campaign, beating Fernando Alonso to the finish line by a comfortable 12.4 seconds.
Raikkonen and his Lotus team can partly thank their brilliant pit-stop strategy for their victory at Melbourne's Albert Park, after the Finn only needed to make two visits to the pit lane over the grand prix’s 58 laps.
A conservative effort to keep Pirelli’s new P Zero tyres in good condition proved vital for Raikkonen, as the six cars behind him all had to make three stops each throughout the race.
Sebastian Vettel, who started the latest defence of his F1 crown with a third-place finish in the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, picked up on this point. He stated: "When you have pole you want to win the race but it was clear in the first few laps that our tyres were falling apart.
"I thought that Kimi did the best job today. And Ferrari were also strong. I'm happy with third but we will have to do some homework on the tyres."
The 2013 F1 season continues on Sunday (March 24th) with the Malaysian Grand Prix.
