The second round of the FIA GT series is set for this weekend, April 20 to 21st, in Zolder. There, Italian tyre maker, Pirelli, will continue supplying P Zero slicks and P Zero wets to competitors at the Belgian circuit.
Pirelli has signed on to supply the entire FIA GT series, as well as the Blancpain Endurance Series in Monza. Between the two, Pirelli is at the forefront of the endurance racing industry. The tyre maker was a natural choice for the series, with its rich history endurance racing.
The FIA GT series will benefit from Pirelli’s new tyres, designed for rear and mid-engined cars. Production processes perfected in the Formula One series will be utilised at the FIA events.
Three qualifying sessions will be held on Saturday, April 20th, followed by an hour-long championship race on Sunday, April 21st.
The second round of the FIA GT series marks the 50th anniversary of the Zolder circuit. The Belgian circuit presents a serious challenge to the tyre maker, who, so far, has enjoyed successful performances at FIA GT events, including the opening round in Nogaro, France. Belgium’s famous track is just over four kilometres long with ten corners. The track is often wet as the climate is rainy this season, so Pirelli will definitely be bringing its wet tyres for race day.
Senior tyre engineer, Matteo Braga, said: “Zolder is a narrow, technical circuit and the teams may have to think carefully about tyre management in order to make the most of the limited opportunities they will have to overtake. Just like Spa, the weather can be variable and ambient temperatures are sometimes quite low. Its going to be important for the tyres to offer a good warm-up and deliver consistent performance over a wide range of speeds, conditions, car types and driving styles”. For this reason, he described the FIA GT series as “one of the biggest challenges a tyre company can face in motorsport”.
Along with Pirelli, drivers are pumped-up and ready for action. Nogaro winners, Belgian Audi Club Team WRT’s Edward Sandstrom and Frank Stippler will face off against nine-time world rally champion, Sebastien Loeb in the second round. Undoubtedly, Belgian duo Anthony Kumpen and Enzo Ide will be among the crowd’s favourites.
Mr Kumpen of the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS Ultra team, said: “For me it is very special to race at Zolder, I won the 24 hours of Zolder six-times, it is my home track, and the track where I did my first steps in racing, my first laps in a race car. It is really exciting to be here for this race”. He anticipates a large, enthusiastic crowd for race day.
All eyes will be on the Zolder circuit this weekend. Will Pirelli shine on the race track as it did in Nogaro? Will drivers be up to the task? Don’t miss a minute of the action this weekend.
