Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber is the latest name to lend his support to the performance of the Pirelli tyres used so far this season.
It follows Michael Schumacher’s stinging criticism of the compounds and their high degradation, which the German believes is having too much of an influence on race results.
The comments came after the 43-year-old suffered a nightmare weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix, finishing tenth after starting in 22nd place following a five-place grid penalty incurred for changing his gearbox.
Webber fared slightly better on the day, although a fourth place finish meant the Australian missed out on a podium place.
The race saw Pirelli’s new tyres endure their most significant levels of degradation yet, in a factor that only added to the drama of the race. It was an addition which Webber welcomed, with the driver today praising the extra edge the compounds bring to the sport.
"We would all love to have quicker laptimes and extremely consistent tyres like we did in the old days, but that wasn't the most exciting thing for the racing," he told Autosport.
"Trying to find somewhere in the middle is always tricky, but at the moment we have a pretty good show for the crowd.”
The Spanish Grand Prix is up next, with championship leader Sebastian Vettel keen to establish a solid lead at the top of the standings.
