Pirelli tyres set for Formula One debut in Brazil

21st November 2011

Pirelli's new compound soft tyres are set to be used in a race for the first time at next weekend's Formula One Grand Prix in Brazil.

The news comes following successful trials of the new Pirelli tyres at a Nurburgring free practice and during a young driver test held in Abu Dhabi last week.

As part of the Formula One debut, which also marks the final race of the 2011 season, new hard tyres will also be used during Friday's practice sessions.

Paul Hembery, Pirelli motorsport director, explained that the decision to debut the tyres early came after positive results during the recent tests.

"In general, the tyres are going to be less conservative next year as the second half of this season has shown how well the teams have understood our product," he said.

The move sees the tyre manufacturer begin preparations for the 2012 season with the development of a new range of Pirelli tyres.

"In general, the tyres are going to be less conservative next year as the second half of this season has shown how well the teams have understood our product," he said.

Under current plans, Pirelli look set to introduce more race specific tyres, with soft and supersoft tyres already proving popular at the Korean Grand Prix earlier this year.
