Red Bull driver Mark Webber was left toasting a job well done yesterday (July 8th) after his team's bold strategy on the Pirelli tyres used in the sport paid off, with the Australian finishing top of the podium at the British Grand Prix.
The 35-year-old's win over Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who finished second at Silverstone, saw him edge to within 13 points of the Spaniard at the top of the World Championship standings too.
In truth, the win had looked doubtful for long spells of the race, with Webber trailing Alonso until four laps from the finish. However it was the Australian's choice of tyres – Red Bull Renault opted for softer tyres compared with Ferrari's harder compounds – which proved decisive in allowing him to overtake Alonso at the finish.
Webber said: "I've had a few [wins], but this one is taking a little bit to sink in. It didn't look like a spectacular race between us initially, but it was one – pacing the stints on the tyres, Fernando starting on the harder tyre…
"After the first stint Fernando had I thought he was in good shape to close the win out. But it came our way and I am absolutely over the moon, absolutely rapt."
Reigning champion Sebastian Vettel finished third, while the McLaren duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button came eighth and tenth respectively.
