Pirelli has launched its new tyres for the 2012 Formula One World Championship today (January 25th), as the start of the new season draws closer.
As part of the changes introduced for this year, new compounds have been introduced for all tyres apart from the supersoft versions used in 2011.
The main alterations will see the Italian manufacturer provider softer compound that provides a longer performance peak for drivers in the sport.
Described as much squarer in profile, the new tyres will feature a more stable contact patch, which has been introduced in line with new aerodynamic regulations.
Last year, Pirelli won praise for its daring choice of compounds, which degraded rapidly, causing high drama more pitstops and more overtaking.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new editions, Pirelli president Marco Tronchetti Provera promised more of the same.
He said: "The teams asked us to continue providing tyres with the characteristics that contributed to spectacular races in 2011.
"This is what we have done, optimising the compounds and profiles in order to guarantee even better and more stable performance, combined with the deliberate degradation."
The new tyres are set to premier at the start of the Formula One season this March.
