Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli turned out to the annual MotorSport Vision Racing media day, in order to promote the latest chapter of its partnership with the MINI Challenge.
The MINI Challenge enters its 12th season in 2013, having established itself as one of the most prestigious one-make championships across the UK over the past decade or so.
Pirelli became associated with the popular British-based motorsport last year, and are equipping the cars of the drivers involved in the upcoming campaign after a highly successful inaugural season.
As such, the firm’s products will be shown off across all 20 races set out in the 2013 MINI Challenge calendar. These races will form a total of seven events, with a typical weekend of action consisting of one qualifying session and a trio of 20-minute races.
In anticipation for the new season, those MINI Challenge drivers in attendance at this year’s MotorSport Vision Racing media day were able to try out Pirelli 225/625-17 WH wet tyre on a Brands Hatch circuit that had been subjected to heavy rain showers.
Looking at the event, Matthew Corby, the motorsport operations manager at Pirelli UK, said: “It was fantastic to kickstart this year’s MINI Challenge with a press day that was so well attended by media and guests.
“This will be our second year working with the championship and it is very encouraging to hear how many drivers have already signed up this season. With Zandvoort also included in this year’s calendar, this year’s MINI Challenge is set to be the most successful season to date.”
Antony Williams, the series promoter of the upcoming MINI Challenge, was also keen to stress his delight at the motorsport series and Pirelli continuing their partnership into 2013 and potentially beyond.
He commented: “The media day, organised by MSVR at Brands Hatch was an excellent event where the Pirelli, Scalextric and BizKarts liveried MINIs stood out as the most attractive and individual cars in the pitlane.
“We are delighted to be working with Pirelli again this year and expect the excellent products and customer service to help us build the 2013 grid still further and prepare the MINI Challenge for an even more successful 2014.”
Tyres from Pirelli will feature in the 2013 MINI Challenge campaign after either being fitted to cars in the turbocharged JCW class or those associated with the Cooper class.
Pirelli is enjoying plenty of activities in the motorsport world, with the Italian manufacturer only announcing in the past week that it will be supplying tyres to the vehicles of a number of championship contenders involved in the 2013 Italian Rally Championship.
On top of this, the firm saw its new Formula One (F1) Pirelli P Zero tyres in action when the 2013 edition of the prestigious motorsport got underway with the Australian Grand Prix last weekend.
Highlighting recently what F1 fans can expect from its new products, Paul Hembery, motorsport director of Pirelli, noted: "In 2012, we saw a tendency through the season toward one pit stop, and we want to get back to two to three. [But] you won't be seeing five or six pit stops or anything like that.
"We have taken the approach that the compounds are more aggressive, the structures are faster and create a much more rapid heat build-up, and in certain cases that will lead to quicker degradation. It will probably take five to six races until the teams understand the different compounds and how to get the best of them."
The 2013 MINI Challenge gets underway at the Snetterton race track, in Norfolk, between April 6th and 7th.
Drivers are urged to head along to ATS Euromaster, where they will find a wide variety of Pirelli tyres.
