A key member of Ferrari’s Formula One (F1) pit team believes that the motorsport’s new tyres will create some thrills at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix next weekend.
There has been much talk and debate about the new tyres from Pirelli ever since the products were first tested at the Jerez race track early in February.
It was common knowledge that the Italian manufacturer had engineered the F1 tyres for the 2013 season so that they degraded much quicker than previous tyre ranges used in the prestigious motorsport.
However, the products are designed to work best in hot temperatures, but this year’s pre-season testing has occurred in locations across Spain which have witnessed uncommon cool conditions.
Looking into this issue, Ferrari technical director Pat Fry acknowledged: "I think the race pace is going to be down to how you use the tyres. I think there's still going to be a lot of people learning things in Melbourne to be honest.
“The tyres here have been graining massively so what we learn here won't necessarily carry over to Melbourne. There will be a few surprised people and a few shocked people, but it will be the same for everyone.”
