Questions raised about Pagani Huayra’s power lap on Top Gear

28th February 2013

It has emerged that the new Pagani Huayra was fitted with track tyres when it set the lap record on the first episode of the current series of BBC hit show Top Gear.

The popular motoring show returned with a bang in 2013, when the stylish sports car set a time of 1:13.8 after being taken around the iconic Dunsfold circuit with the Stig at the steering wheel.

Such a blistering pace saw the Pagani Huayra jump to the top of the programme's leaderboard, eclipsing previous times set by the likes of the Ariel Atom V8 and the McLaren 12C.

However, after CarsUK.net and US publication Jalopnik questioned the lap with Pagani, the manufacturer confessed that the car's regular Pirelli P Zero tyres had been switched with Zonda R track tyres between Richard Hammond taking the car out for a drive and the Stig performing the vehicle's power lap.

Pagani stated: "We used both during the shooting at Top Gear test track. We reported Pirelli P Zero Corsa on our press release because we want, for communication reasons, to push them on the media."

It has not yet been revealed if the Pagani Huayra will be required to set a new power lap on the Pirelli P Zero tyres to keep its place on the Top Gear lap leaderboard.
