World Superbike riders praise Pirelli’s new tyres

5th July 2012

Riders at the World Superbike Championship have praised Pirelli's new 17-inch tyres following a one-day test event in Spain.

Held at the Motorland Aragon track, near Alcaniz, the tests were designed to offer competitors a chance to try out the new larger aluminium wheels which will be used from the start of the 2013 season.

The majority of riders claimed that the new tyres assisted them around the course, with many noting that they offered increased grip.

Marco Melandri, driver for BMW Motorrad Motorsport, said that the new compound offered him more control around the track.

He said: "It was interesting to ride the new 17-inch tyres. The bike characteristics look more precise. For sure we still have a lot of work to do with the tyre but also with the bike to find a good set-up for this kind of tyre."

Melandri added that he would like to test out the new tyres again before next season.

Tom Sykes set the fastest time on the new tyres with a best lap of 1min 57.254secs.
