An off-road vehicle specialist is set to introduce ‘airless’ tyres which can withstand rough terrain sometime in the next year.
Polaris is preparing to launch consumer editions of its ‘airless’ Non-Pneumatic Tire (NPT) by the early months of 2014.
The products stand out due to the fact that they are made from a proprietary plastic, while also replacing a conventional tyre design with a flexible web instead.
As such, the bottom of the NPT is styled in a way that it will give in to obstacles like rocks, curbs, and other tricky terrain when encountered. The result of this is that drivers should encounter less punctures when taking their vehicle off-road.
Jason Difuccia, a spokesperson at Polaris, was quoted by Fox News as saying: "The tyre works very similar to a bicycle wheel, where the load is carried in tension across the top of the wheel.”
The decision to pursue consumer models of the NPT came about after Polaris acquired the small Wisconsin-based startup business Resilient Technologies – the company which originally created these unique products.
