Report: 2,000 part-worn tyres brought into NI every week

31st October 2011

Around 2,000 part-worn tyres are being brought into Northern Ireland every week, according to new research.

The Belfast Telegraph has revealed that more part-worn tyres being sold as brand new products as retailers fail to comply with labelling regulations.

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) is now urging local authorities to clamp down on the sale of illegal tyres.

Barry Douglas, an NTDA spokesman, claimed that Northern Irish motorists could be risking their lives and the lives of others by purchasing sub-standard tyres.

"There is a real problem with tyres not being sold properly and legally and in some cases part-worn tyres are being sold without the knowledge of the person buying them," he told the news provider.

Last year, a survey by the NTDA found that 95 per cent of part-worn tyres being sold were illegal as they were not labelled as second-hand.
