Survey: Majority of Brits unaware of legal tyre limits

30th September 2011

The majority of drivers in the UK are unaware of the correct pressure and tread depth for their tyres, according to new research.

A survey from comparison website confused.com has revealed that 57 per cent of British motorists don't know their tyres should have a tread depth of 1.6mm.

Furthermore, 58 cent of respondents are unaware of the correct pressure of their tyres, with 18 to 24-year-olds being the key culprits.

Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at confused.com, said: "Tyre maintenance may not sound like the most exciting topic on the planet but is important to basic road safety.

"If your tyres have too much air or too little this can wear the tread of tyres down quickly."

Tyres with a tread of less than 1.6mm are illegal, with drivers subject to a £2,500 fine and three penalty points for each unlawful tyre. Motorists with four defective tyres could face a maximum fine of up to £10,000 and 12 penalty points.
