Understanding the rules of towing a vehicle

25th January 2013

Many drivers will go through the task of towing a vehicle during their life on the road, though there are many tips which should be followed to make this a safe and pleasant experience.

Road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) acknowledged that the pressure of all tyres – these being those fitted to both the car and a towing vehicle – should comply with the manufacturer's handbook.

On the topic of vehicle maintenance, all extra rear lights must be connected and fully functional, while brakes and indicators need to be tested to ensure they are in good working order.

When out on the road with a towing vehicle, drivers should ensure they increase their stopping distances due to the extra weight, as well as using their car's mirrors frequently to spot for any potential hazards.

Peter Rodger, an advanced driver at the IAM, commented: "Whether you're towing a speedboat, a horsebox, a caravan or another car, there are certain rules which must be applied. It is important to recognise the challenges which come with having to control not just one vehicle, but two."
